The homelessness crisis is on the rise, especially post pandemic in the GTA. There are a multitude of ways one can aid someone experiencing homelessness. Here are a few practical, simple, and helpful things you may consider doing the next time you walk by someone experiencing homelessness.
1. Smile A lot of the time, you may not have any cash in hand. Something as simple as a smile
can go a long way. Try greeting someone in need with a smile, saying “happy holidays”, or “how are you”. When someone is greeted like this, they feel valued, seen, and acknowledged.

2. Donate Hand Warmers
Hand warmers are extremely useful to give to those experiencing homelessness who are unable to be accommodated in Toronto’s shelters. They are good for keeping one’s hands and feet warm in cold winter months.

3. Giving Gift Cards
Giving a gift card to McDonalds, TimHortons, a hotel, or a local grocery store is a great way to ensure that the recipient gets what they need, when they need it. Recipients also have the ability to choose to buy what they need with dignity.

4. Donate Winter Clothing
Whether it’s new or gently used, consider dropping off winter clothing to the nearest shelter. Winter clothing in Toronto is extremely practical. Even if gently used, this can make a huge difference.
