What is Youth Homelessness?

Youth Homelessness is defined as the “situation and experience of young people between the ages of 13 and 24 who are living independently of parents and/or caregivers, but do not have the means or ability to acquire a stable, safe or consistent residence”. (Canadian Observatory on Homelessness,2016,p1), is more than just a social issue. It represents a pathway leading to the destruction of one’s life. During this crucial age of self-discovery and transformation, facing daily struggles for shelter, food, and clothing signifies society’s failure to provide suitable living conditions.

What are the causes of Youth Homelessness?

One of the leading causes of youth homelessness is an abusive environment, characterized by mental, physical, or emotional abuse. Regardless of the victim’s age, such abuse inflicts immense trauma driving many to flee these hostile settings. Moreover, the prevalence of discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community adds to the escalating issue. When young individuals identify as gay, lesbian, or transgender, they often face rejection from their families and judgment from society. Consequently, they seek solace in accepting and respectful environments, leading them away from their homes. Racism, though significantly reduced, still exists in society, impacting the lives of marginalized youth. Discrimination based on physical appearances beyond their control can lead to exclusion and limited opportunities, pushing them toward homelessness. Another heartbreaking scenario involves young teenagers venturing into the world to follow their passions, yet their knowledge of reality remains confined to comics and fairy tales. In contrast to their idealized perceptions, the harsh truth of the real world forces some of them to confront homelessness. In today’s fast-paced world, poverty drives many young people to leave their homes. This is especially true for older youths(16+) who start feeling like a burden to their parents and believe that their family’s financial struggles are because of them.

Solutions to Youth Homelessness

Government-funded initiatives strive to address homelessness, offering support and affordable housing to those at risk. Programs like Homeless Prevention Program and emergency shelter solutions aim to combat this pervasive issue. However, the government cannot alone tackle such a colossal problem. As a community, we must educate ourselves and others about youth homelessness, spreading awareness and understanding. When encountering a homeless person, educating them about available government services can provide them with vital support. Non-profit organizations also play a significant role in this battle against homelessness. Contributions, whether monetary, food, or clothing donations, can make a difference in the lives of those struggling. Additionally, as parents and guardians, it is crucial to educate children about the realities of the world while fostering a safe and nurturing environment at home. Creating a loving and supportive environment ensures that the thought of escaping their homes never crosses their minds, allowing them to lead happy and secure lives. Youth homelessness is a heartrending issue that requires collective efforts, compassion, and understanding from society, Together, we can provide hope, support, and opportunities to the vulnerable youth, giving them a chance to rebuild their lives and find redemption. Let us unite as a community and strive for a future where no young person is left to wander the streets in search of a home.
