While homelessness is a global challenge, it’s important to acknowledge that men make up a significant majority, accounting for around 70 percent of the homeless population. However, this disproportion often overshadows the distinct struggles faced by women experiencing homelessness. This article seeks to shed light on some of these unique problems, calling for increased attention and support.

  1. Prostitution: For homeless women, the harsh reality often leads them to consider prostitution as a means of survival. Faced with the dire need of money and lacking alternatives, they find themselves forced into this risky trade. This leaves them vulnerable to physical assault and sexual abuse, with long lasting effects on their mental and emotional well being. Additionally, navigating unwanted pregnancies without adequate access to health care further compounds their difficulties.

  2. Limited Access to Menstrual Products: The monthly menstrual cycle is an especially challenging time for homeless women. Dealing with physical discomfort, mood swings, and the emotional toll of their situation is exceptionally difficult without proper medical support. Moreover, the financial strain forces them to choose between essentials like food and menstrual hygiene products.

  3. Family Responsibilities: Many homeless women find themselves responsible for children or elderly parents, a situation less common among homeless men. Balancing the need to ensure their child’s safety and future prospects while struggling to secure basic necessities is an immense challenge.

  4. Gender Inequality in Jobs: While progress has been made in providing equal opportunities for women in higher paying skilled positions the same cannot be said for low wage, unskilled labor jobs. Discrimination, underpayment, and disrespect remain prevalent issues for women in such roles. Instances of physical, sexual, or emotional assault by employers or co workers further escalate the inequality.

  5. Biological Vulnerability to The Cold: Scientifically, women have a lower resistance to extreme cold due to differences in metabolic rate, muscle mass, and physiological responses. While this may seem trivial, it underscores a critical point. When exposed to freezing temperatures, women are at higher risk of severe cold related injuries. This emphasizes the urgent needs to provide shelter for homeless women, particularly during colder months.

Understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by homeless women is a crucial step towards a more inclusive and effective approach to homelessness. By acknowledging these specific issues, we can work towards solutions that provide targeted support, ultimately helping these women rebuild their lives with dignity and stability.
